When I started my practice, I knew little about business or marketing. No one talked about these fundamental skills in graduate school. And the attitude I held from my negative experiences with sales people was that marketing was manipulative at best, phony and self-serving at worst.
I also knew that my work was a service of deep caring. I wanted to help people find a sense of security within themselves, confidence, peace and profound self-acceptance. When I wrote my first "blurbs" on sites like PsychologyToday.com, that's what I wrote about. It was such a relief NOT to write about myself. AND IT WORKED.
As I've "formalized" my training in business and marketing (by taking classes and reading like mad), I've seen that the most successful business people are the ones who employ the skills that we therapists and healing professionals already do best: empathy, integrity, and authenticity.
